London City Breaks And Shopping

without comments

The capital city of England, London, is as famous for its unique shopping opportunities as it is for its long history and interesting culture Visitors from all ’round the world fly to London to indulge in the immense number of boutique stores, department stores and specialist markets. With the strong $ and the weak Pound those folk visiting from America will find goods are far less expensive as in recent years, the same can be said for those people arriving from other countries in Europe because the UK £ is also weak against the Euro.

Well Known London Stores

Possibly the most well known London department store is Harrods of Knightsbridge the largest in the world having a total of 18,000 m2 of floor space.  ‘Omnia Omnibus Ubique’ is the Harrods motto and means all things for all people, everywhere. Harrods has earned a reputation of being exclusive and luxurious and their food hall and toy department are most well known

Selfridges is another department store well worth a mention.  Found on Oxford Street, the store first opened for business in 1909. Named after, and constructed by the American businessman Gordon Selfridge the department store had been carefully designed so that items on sale were more easily accessible to the customer which was a radical departure from the common practices of the day.

Key Shopping Areas In London

Covent Garden has become extremely well known for its specialist and unusual shops and is generally accepted as a hip place to hang out. Besides the amazing stores you will also find a number of restaurants and eating places around Covent Garden.

Another popular London market is Camden Market. Although there have been a variety of markets in Camden for an incredibly long time the present market has only been there since 1974. Camden’s market is actually a group of various adjoining markets selling various goods together providing a massive variety of wares.

Streets In London Well Known For Shopping

The Kings Road is Chelsea’s main high which is one of the most stylish and chic streets, in London, on which to go shopping. The Kings Road has long been associated with fashion and the manager of the punk band the “Sex Pistols” once owned a clothes shop/boutique there making the road popular with punks as a place to hang out and be seen, in more recent times the Kings Road is much more subdued but still well worth a visit.

Sloane Street is another London road with a strong association with shopping which is named after Sir Hans Sloane who purchased much of the land in the area in 1712.
